Questions

What people ask before they come

Does it hurt?

Most people feel a quick pinch or nothing as a needle goes in, and some feel a dull ache, warmth or heaviness near it. Feelings differ from person to person. Tell your acupuncturist if anything bothers you and they will adjust or remove the needle.

Are the needles clean?

Yes. Needles are sterile, thin and used once, then thrown away in a sharps container. Your acupuncturist cleans their hands and your skin before placing them.

How many visits will I need?

That is your plan to make with your acupuncturist, never a promise. Many people start with a visit a week for a few weeks and then space them out. You can stop at any time.

Does insurance cover it?

We don't take insurance directly. Some plans reimburse acupuncture when you send in an itemized receipt, and your plan decides. Ask the front desk for a receipt after any visit.

Can I use my HSA or FSA?

Often, yes. Ask your plan administrator, and ask us for an itemized receipt.

What should I wear and eat?

Wear loose clothes that roll up past your elbows and knees, and socks you can take off. Eat something light beforehand. Coming hungry or very full makes sitting still harder.

What happens at a first visit?

A short conversation, then you choose a chair and a blanket. Your acupuncturist places needles, mostly at your hands, forearms, lower legs and feet, and you rest for about an hour. The first visit runs about a quarter hour longer.

Can I come if I'm pregnant?

Tell us at the start. Some points are left out during pregnancy, and your acupuncturist will adjust. Check with your midwife or doctor too.

Will I have to stop my medicine?

No. Keep taking what your prescriber has given you, and tell your prescriber and your acupuncturist about everything you take.

What does acupuncture not do, and when should I see a doctor?

It does not replace your doctor, your medicines, tests or emergency care. Call 911 for chest pain, trouble breathing, a sudden severe headache, sudden weakness or numbness, or a serious injury. See your doctor first for a new or worsening symptom, a fever or an injury.

What if I can't pay the top of the range?

Pay what you can. Pick any amount in the range, with no proof of income. If the bottom is still too much, tell the front desk and we will work something out.

Still wondering?

Call or text the front desk.
